The Libby, Montana and Zonolite connection

A very large portion of the vermiculite sold in North America was mined near Libby, Montana, at a site that happened to sit on a natural deposit of asbestos. Much of that material was sold under the brand name Zonolite. Because the asbestos and vermiculite were mixed together in the ground, the finished insulation could carry asbestos fibres.

Health Canada and the EPA advise that vermiculite from this source should be presumed to contain asbestos unless testing proves otherwise. Not every granule is contaminated, but the only way to know is to test.

Asbestos is dangerous only when its microscopic fibres become airborne and are inhaled. Exposure is associated with serious lung disease, including asbestosis and mesothelioma, often decades after the fact. Do not disturb it

If you suspect you have vermiculite, the safest first action is to leave it completely alone. Disturbing it is what releases fibres into the air. That means:

  • Do not sweep, vacuum, or move the material

  • Seal and limit access to the space, and keep children and pets out
